On 26 September 1212, the Holy Roman Emperor Frederick II issued the Golden Bull of Sicily to confirm the royal title of Otakar I in Bohemia for the Přemyslid Dynasty. The House of Přemyslid was the first Czech ruling house, said to be founded by the plowman Přemyslid who was married to the Princess Libuse. Bohemia had become part of the Holy Roman Empire during the rule of Vaclav I, but there were power struggles amongst the Bohemian kings and its aristocracy.

Agnes of Prague was King Otaker’s youngest daughter with Queen Constance of Hungary. In 1231, Holy Roman Emperor Frederick II’s marriage proposal to Agnes was rejected by her brother King Wenceslas I. Agnes then devoted her life to helping the poor and ill citizens in Bohemia. In 1233, Agnes established a hospital to take care for the less fortunate and ill people who needed help. This was a very popular concept for those seeking forgiveness and salvation.

This hospital was then placed in the order of the Crosiers of the Red Star. This brotherhood was the first religious order to be founded in Bohemia. Agnes also went on to spread her charity and kindness by building a monastery for woman and convent for friars with Pope Gregory IX’s approval. Agnes died on 2 March 1282, from famine. She was canonized 12 November 1989 by Pope John Paul II.
