September 11: Hudson Discovers Manhattan
On 11 September 1609, an explorer by the name of Henry Hudson discovered the island of Manhattan which is now part of the State of New York.
Hudson was able to discover this area because on April 4 of that year, the trading company that he worked for had asked him to find a new passage to Asia. But while he was traveling the route that they had planned for him to go, he was stopped because ice blocked their path. He then took it upon himself to turn the ship around and sail westward toward the Americas. He decided to go this way because he had heard rumors that there was a passage in the Americas.
On July 2, Hudson landed in what is now Nova Scotia and spent ten days there meeting with the natives, repairing his ship, and fishing. About a month later, Hudson and his team landed in what is now Cape Cod. From there, they sailed south towards Chesapeake Bay. But instead of exploring the bay, he went north and found Delaware Bay.
Finally on September 11, Hudson sailed to the upper bay, which is now Manhattan. On September 23, he decided it was time to return home. Even though he did not find the route he was looking for, Hudson didn’t return home empty handed because he had done his far share of trading while on his journey.
