On 7 October 2001, the United States invasion of Afghanistan begins with an air assault and covert operations on the ground. This stems from the September 11 attacks to the World Trade Centers, the Pentagon and a planned attack on the Capital Building in Washington, D.C

On September 11, the city of New York and the whole United States was in utter shock when two planes crashed into the North and South towers of the World Trade Center. Within hours, both of these 110-story buildings came crashing down to the ground sending debris and dust throughout the surrounding areas.

A third plane was also hijacked and was sent into the Pentagon which is where the United States Department of Defense is headquartered. A forth plane, United 93, was also hijacked by the Islamic terrorist group al-Qaeda and was supposed to be crashed into the Capitol building but passengers on the flight tried to overcome the hijackers and the plane eventually crashed into a field near Shanksville, Pennsylvania. In total, 2,977 victims and 19 hijackers were killed in the attacks.

October 7 is important because this was the day the War on Terror was started because we knew that the actions by al-Qaeda needed justice and, essentially, President George W. Bush said no one can mess with our country without having payback. He demanded that the Taliban should hand over Osama Bin Laden and get rid of the al-Qaeda group. They did not hand him over because they “lacked evidence” of the attacks being led by him, but later, in a 2004 video, Osama Bin Laden admits to being a part of the attacks.
