On 17 October 1777, British General John Burgoyne surrendered his troops to the Continental U.S Army after being beaten at the Battle of Saratoga while trying to split the U.S. army in two. Burgoyne thought it would be a good idea to attack Bemis Heights, a U.S. base along the Hudson River. Unfortunately for him the U.S. army warmly greeted him there.

Before this battle, the Continental Army was only supporting itself with the determination of its troops and what little aid the French was giving them; mainly firearms and money. This was because the French did not want the fury of the British faced towards them. After the Battle of Saratoga, the French openly started to support the American Revolution. The adding of the French forces to the Continental Army didn’t just bring more firearms and money, it brought men, artillery, and—most importantl—the French navy. The arrival of the French forces made way for the support of other nations, such as Holland and Spain. With the combined forces of the French and Spanish fleets, America gained the upper hand against the British navy and the war.

The American victory at the Battle of Saratoga gave the needed support that the newly formed army needed. The support of all three nations finally paid off at the Siege of Yorktown, the last major battle of the war.
