On 14 November1969, the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) successfully launched Apollo 12 into space.

Apollo 12 was the second manned mission to the moon launched from Kennedy Space Center in Florida. Apollo 11 was launched four months early sending Buzz Aldrin and Neil Armstrong to the moon; the first men to walk on the Moon. Apollo 12 was commanded by Pete Conrad, Richard F. Gordon, and Alan L. Bean, who were all Navy Captains.

NASA was brought into existence by a force outside of the United States. That was the Soviet Union’s launch Sputnik, an orbiting satellite about the size of a beach ball. There were debates in the United States Congress that were discussing whether a space program should be a new agency or a division of an already existing institution such as the National Science Foundation or whether it should be part of a military division. President Eisenhower signed the National Aeronautics and Space Act into law on 29 July 1958.
