December 9: Merry Christmas Charlie Brown
On 9 December 1965, a humble Christmas special was released to the world. A Charlie Brown Christmas was first aired on the CBS network during the holiday season of that year. What was initially predicted to be a commercial flop ended up becoming a holiday tradition for the next 50 years.
The short film was produced by Lee Mendelson and directed by Bill Melendez on a tight budget of $96,000 with only six months to animate. They were very unorthodox with how the made the short film by hiring child actors to play the voices of the characters, approving a soundtrack that primarily featured jazz, and not using a laugh track which was considered a must in television animation. The special’s critical success landed it an Emmy and inspired a whole generation of animators including Pete Docter and Andrew Stanton who are famous for several of Pixar’s films.
A Charlie Brown Christmas is best known for its message about the true meaning of Christmas. In a time where American consumerism was growing rapidly so was the commercialization of Christmas. The special had a very clear cut message that Christmas was meant to be about celebrating the birth of Jesus Christ and spending it with the ones you love.
The most iconic scene has Charlie Brown wandering through a lot looking for a Christmas tree. He passes dozens of fake trees until he comes to a small and sickly looking tree. He decides to pick that one because it is the only real tree on the whole lot. This scene single handedly killed off the demand for the aluminum trees that had been popular from 1958-1965 when the special was first aired causing them to fall out of production completely within two years.
