December 26 is a very important day for docudrama horror history.
On 26 December 1620, Elizabeth Báthory’s crimes were uncovered. She is the most prolific female serial killer in history torturing and killing hundreds between 1585 and 1610. This led to countless movies such as Daughters of Darkness (1971), Bathory (2008), and The Countess (2009).
On 26 December 1996, JonBenét Ramsey, a six year old beauty queen from Boulder, Colorado, is found beaten and strangled in her family’s basement. This event is told through two movies, Perfect Murder, Perfect Town and Getting Away With Murder: The JonBenet Ramsey Mystery both from 2000.
On 26 December 1973, The Exorcist, the most horrific movie loosely based on actual events, premiered. This film is an adaptation of the 1971 novel The Exorcist by William Peter Blatty which was a New York Times Best Seller for 55 weeks. The book was inspired by the exorcist case from Maryland in 1949. The Exorcist, directed by William Friedkin, was an X-rated film that tells the story of pre-teen Regan who is possessed by a demonic force and her mother who tries to help her along with Catholic priests.
