On 25 December 1971, there was an American Football Conference (AFC) Divisional Playoff Game between the Kansas City Chiefs, and the Miami Dolphins. This game ended up being a total of 82 minutes and 40 seconds long, resulting in being the longest and one of the most exciting NFL games ever played.

Jan Stenerud, the Kansas City Chiefs kicker, opened the scoring with 24-yard field goal for 3 points. Following this, the Chiefs added another 7 points from their defensive back Willie Lanier who intercepted a pass from Bob Griese and returned 17 yards from the play which lead up to Len Dawson’s 7-yard touchdown pass to Ed Podolak making it 10-0. In the second quarter, the Dolphins quarterback Bob Griese complete a 23-yard pass to Paul Warfield and then a 16-yard pass to Marv Fleming which lead to Larry Csonka’s 1-yard touchdown rush. A few moments before half-time, the Dolphins recovered a fumbled ball, and kicked a 14-yard field goal to tie the game at 10-10.

In the third quarter, both teams scored touchdowns. One from Kansas City’s Jim Otis, and Miami’s Jim Kiick. When the fourth quarter came around, the Chiefs Ed Podolak scored a 3-yard touchdown to re-gain the lead. Miami struck back with a touchdown pass from Griese to Fleming, making the game 24-24. With a minute left in regulation, the Chiefs had their chance to take the game. Stenerud missed a 31-yard field goal attempt, making the game go into overtime.

During the first overtime period, there was no score. Both teams missed their scoring chances. Stenerud’s 42-yard attempt was blocked and Garo Yepremian missed his 52-yard attempt. During the second overtime, Yepremian had a chance to redeem himself and end the game. His second attempt was good, and he completed a 37-yard attempt resulting in the Miami Dolphins winning 27-24.
