December 5: State Funeral for Napoleon
On 5 December 1840, the famous French general and emperor Napoleon Bonaparte was finally given a French state funeral in Paris, France.
The great historical figure’s remains had been left on the island of St. Helena since his death there in 1821; just six years after he had been confined to exile there. But the French government at the time did not want a coup and so it was that Napoleon did not return to France for nineteen years. It was only by deciding to remember, instead of forgetting, the past that the government allowed for Napoleon’s remains to be returned to France for final burial.
That December day was certainly a chilly one, but the French citizens who attended the funeral bundled up. Braving the cold was not easy, because the temperature was eight degrees below freezing. Yet the cold helped to keep the crowd from clashing with the government.
It was certainly a more fitting farewell for Napoleon, considering that his request for burial on the banks of the Seine River was denied by the British. But to this day, some speculate that Napoleon was deliberately poisoned by the British. Regardless of speculation and circumstance, Napoleon’s legacy was finally acknowledged as many French citizens payed their last respects to the man who had freed their country from The Reign of Terror.
