On 12 January 2010, near the town of Leogane just west of Port-au-Prince, a magnitude of 7.0 earthquake occurred at 16:53 local time. The earthquake left 220,000 people dead and 300,000 injured.

This massive catastrophe also brought on an outpouring of humanitarian aid with $13.5 billion in donations and pledges, but Haiti still has a long road to recovery. Although rubble has been removed from the streets, there have not been enough improvements given the resources provided. Many people question where all of the money went with accusations of fraud which have caused riots throughout the community.

In Haiti, education can be as precious as water and many of the affordable schools were destroyed from the earthquake losing close to 75 percent of them leaving many students with little to no options. One of the biggest goals for the up and coming years for Haiti is to not only rebuild some of the schools but also rebuild the hopes of the young adults who have been set back from the struggles of the earthquake.
