On 2 January 1777, the Second Battle of Trenton took place. This battle was the second in a series of battles led by George Washington which would change the tide of the American Revolution.

Many people know of the painting “Crossing the Delaware” which depicts the American forces crossing the Delaware river prior to the first battle of Trenton. The Americans won the first battle because they had the element of surprise and caught the British and the Hessians off guard. The second battle was different.

The second battle was a success because of Washington’s and his officer’s strategy. The Americans used skirmishing units and a force of roughly 1000-1500 riflemen to intercept the British advance from Princeton. The Americans proceeded to fire on the British and the Hessian troops and would retreat as they got too close. This slowed the advance down enough that once the British had reached Trenton and started to fight most of the day was gone. Night came quickly and the British troops dug in to camp for the night.

Washington and his men knew they were cornered but they had a plan. They would retreat along the Assunpink River then circle around the British forces and before marching to Princeton. This allowed the Americans an advantage by attacking the rear of the British troops at the Battle of Princeton.

The second Battle of Trenton is important culturally for many reasons. First and foremost, it was a turning point in the war and without it we may not have won the war. We also see military strategy in use; some of which we still use today. The Americans used small skirmishing units to harass the British as they marched which was critical as it slowed their advance and allowed the bigger fight to start just before dark. We still use small skirmishing units today for similar purposes. They can scout for intellegencer, gain an advantageous position, or attack a vital target.

Overall it’s easy to see the importance of this battle. It was a crucial time in our history, and there are aspects that we still see cross over in our modern world.
