On the 27 January 1888, the National Geographic Society was founded in Washington D.C. It has gone on to become one of the largest nonprofit organizations in the world today.

The National Geographic Society was originally founded by 33 different scientists and explorers but is now governed by a board of trustees that consists of 21 members. The organization sponsors and funds both scientific research and exploration.
