On 17 January 1995, one of the biggest earthquakes struck Japan in their sixth largest city, Kobe. The earthquake is called the Great Hanshin Earthquake, usually referred to as the Kobe Earthquake. Until the Great Hanshin Earthquake, Kobe had not experienced any major earthquakes for the past four centuries.

The night the tragedy took place, earthquake analysts were noticing some minor tremors. This happened four times but did not alarm anyone. The tremors were only measuring out to be about 2.5m strong. The fifth time these analysts noticed what they thought was going to be another tremor turned into the Kobe Earthquake that measured at a 7.2m earthquake, which turned out to be one of the most tragic earthquakes to happen in Japan at this time. The earthquake began at 5:46a.m. and ended at 5:47a.m. In the end causing 6,300 people killed, over 235,000 injured, 100,000 homeless, and costing $150 billion in damages.

The majority of the deaths that occurred during the earthquake happened in the suburb areas. The people of Japan were wondering why so many buildings and structures were destroyed when they were supposed to be known for their well-designed buildings for these natural disasters and the answer was found after some research was done. The typical houses found in Japan were, in fact, not designed to survive earthquakes. Due to the heavy roofs and the light wood used for the overall structures, the houses were designed to survive typhoons and not earthquakes.
