January 24: The Assassination of Emperor Caligula
On 24 January 41 CE, Caligula was cornered at the Palatine games, where it is rumored he was making an acting debut, and was stabbed 31 times. Caligula’s wife and infant child were also murdered shortly after.
In August of 12 CE, Gaius Julius Cesear Germanicus was born in Antium, what is today Anzio, Italy. He was the great grandson of Emperor Augustus and nephew of Tiberius who would also rule as emperor. As a young boy, Gaius followed his father in his military activities, and earned the nickname Caligula, meaning “little boots” from the soldiers.
Eventually, Caligula was taken under the wing of current ruler and uncle, Tiberius, who prepared him for future success as an emperor. When his moment finally arrived, Caligula found he was not above playing dirty. Convincing one opponent to commit suicide and having another murdered, Caligula was appointed the third emperor of Rome. At first, the young Caligula was celebrated. However, like many of his predecessors, Caligula proved to be a bloodthirsty, womanizing, and self-conscious ruler.
Today, especially for those of us living in the United States, the majority of the world’s most powerful leaders treat those they represent with respect, dignity, and freedom. During Caligula’s reign, however, many were not safe from his insecure, violent wrath. Peers, friends, and even family members were faced with banishment and execution.
