September 22: Ice Cream Cones

On 22 September 1903, Italo Marchiony applied for a patent for a multiple mode ice cream cone maker. On 15 December 1903, he was granted patent number 746971 for his invention. This patent debunks the popular myth that the ice cream cone was invented at the 1904 St. Louis World’s Fair.

There are some who say that history does not change. However, while this might be technically true, our knowledge of history changes as new evidence is discovered. Such is the case with the ice cream cone.

In 1993, Robert J. Weir and Caroline Liddell argued in Ices: The Definitive Guide that Marchiony was the inventor of the ice cream cone. However, since the publication of that book, the authors discovered new evidence. In “An 1807 Ice Cream Cone: Discovery and Evidence,” Weir writes “Subsequently, we found that Mrs. Agnes Marshall (1855-1905) had written about putting ice cream and sorbet in edible cones or cornets in 1888 in her Mrs. Marshall’s Cookery Book, published by Mrs. Marshall’s Cookery School, London, 1888.” Weir and Liddel have since found evidence—in a painting by Louis-Philibert Debucourt—of a woman eating an ice cream cone in 1807.

Although the ice cream cone was not invented at the 1904 St. Louis World’s Fair, there is no doubt that the fair was an amazing spectacle. The introduction to “1904 World’s Fair Virtual Tour” asks the reader to “Imagine yourself back at the turn of the century. You will be visiting a magical, almost imaginary city. There will be immense Palaces, stunning vistas, princesses and daily parades. You will be immersed into a perfectly planned and constructed Utopian model for the future.”

This posting presents a great point for anyone interested in history. As time passes, many times we will uncover more information and details about a historical event. In any case, it takes time and thorough research to find the truth about what really happens. I wouldn’t be surprised if in the near future someone proved the invention of the ice cream cone to be in 1805 – two years prior to the painting by Louis-Philibert Debucourt.

After reading this article, one might begin to question the validity of textbooks and historical events all believed to be factual. I would argue, however, that history isn’t necessarily inaccurate, but simply incomplete. There is so much yet to discover and learn.

Who knows, twenty years from now we may know exactly how and why achitectural masterpieces like Stone Henge were made. Only time will tell.

The number one dessert you think about on a hot summer day is available in every grocery store. Ice cream is a dessert that we all enjoy and have easy access to on a daily basis. Ice cream was not always as easy to get as it is today. When ice cream was first invented many centuries ago, it was served mostly to royalty. Ice was gathered during the winter months from the lakes and ponds and stored in an icehouse or underground chambers. Depending on the conditions the ice could be stored for months. Now, we do not have to wait for the winter months to gather ice to make for the enjoyment of ice cream only during summer months. We can enjoy this delicious frozen goodness all year without too much work. Just open the refrigerator door.
