On 26 September 1902, Löb Strauß died after a success business career. Born in Germany on 26 February 1829, when Strauß emigrated from Germany with his mother and sisters at the age of 18, he changed his name to Levi Strauss.

Strauss’ brothers, Jonas and Louis, had immigrated to the United States before him and had opened a dry goods store in New York. In 1853, Strauss became and American citizen and left New York to open a branch of the family business in San Francisco, California. San Francisco was the commercial center of the gold rush.

When Strauss arrived in California, he discovered that there was a need for durable pants; something that he did not have with him. However, he did have canvas tents from which he made pants.
