October 5: A Day of Music

On October 5, 1943 Steve Miller, the lead guitarist of one of the best and influential American bands ‘Steve Miller Band’, was born in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Later in life he moved to San Francisco, California. After arriving in California, he spent his last $5 to go to a Chuck Berry concert. He was captivated by the vibrancy of the music in the area and in 1967 he formed the The Steve Miller Jazz Band; later renamed to the Steve Miller Band.

In the early 70s the band transformed their sound creating such hits as “The Joker” (1973) and later on would headline for other greatly recognized American bands such as The Eagles (1978). The Steve Miller Band has been releasing many albums and singles since 1968. They currently have released 18 studio albums, three live albums, seven official compilation albums, and upward of 29 singles. With each album the bands’ audiences expanded with the success of releases like “Space Cowboy.” Their success and sound have attracted attention from other leading rock stars such as Paul McCartney who helped co-write and was featured on the track “My Dark Hour.”

Paul McCartney became a household name in America (as well as Ringo Starr, John Lennon, and George Harrison) after The Beatles came to America. Deemed heart throbs, the Beatles became a groundbreaking English band that formed in 1960. Years later they would become the top selling band in history.

On 5 October 1962, nineteen years after Steve Miller was born, the Beatles released their first single in the UK “Love Me Do.” Later on they would release the song in the United States on the 27 April 1962 and it would become a number one hit. The band has had more number-one albums on the British charts and sold more singles in the UK than any other band. This is along with having sold 177 million units in the United States which is more than any other artist. They have topped the Billboard Magazine’s most successful HOT 100 artists list, collectively have been a part of Time magazine’s most influential people list and have received seven Grammy awards.

There is no doubt that the Steve Miller Band and the Beatles have made a mark on American history and music history.

I found this interesting because first of all i am extreme lover of music, and even though both bands were very influential to the music world they weren’t the only ones. The stooges they started the music that we now know today as punk rock. Bands such as Sex Pistols and New York Dolls were two bands who started using punk rock afters seeing the Stooges. Their second album (Fun House) and third album (Raw Power) were easily said to be the best albums the stooges have made. They were inspirational because just like the the Beatles and the Steven Miller Band they were pioneers of greatness. The Genesis of punk was started by the Stooges and that makes the all three bands the Fore Fathers of Rock. This is the most interesting Today In History I have read and commented on.

Reading this immediately made me think of timeless musicians who have made a great impact on the music industry today. One could go on and on who they believed had the greatest impact on today but the first person that came to my mind was Michael Jackson. Michael Jackson started out his career with his brothers in the mid 1960’s called The Jackson 5. The group included 4 out of his 8 siblings and himself. They were an instant success leading Michael to follow through with his solo career in 1971. Michaels career quickly escalated with his hit music that was not only catchy but also delivered great messages to listeners. Jackson introduced a different sounds and dance moves to pop culture that will go down in history with the performer. He won many awards and Grammys in his day and even though he has passed, his mark left on the music industry and fans. To me, Michael Jackson can be connected to many of the founding fathers because of his great impact. We wouldn’t have our great country without people such as George Washington, Ben Franklin, Thomas Jefferson, just as we wouldn’t have the music industry we do without great entertainers such as Michael Jackson.

John Lennon’s influence was felt worldwide, inspiring young musicians and political activists. Yet where he had most impact was at home. On 9 October 1975, John and Yoko Ono gave birth to their only son, Sean Taro Ono Lennon. The experience would change both of their lives dramatically.

Following Sean’s birth, John renounced the music business, and became a stay at home father. Prior to John’s murder, he would spend as much time with Sean as possible. “You don’t really miss anything specific,” Sean said in an interview with New York Magazine “You just miss them breathing, just being there.”

Sean Lennon would become a musician in his own right, often expressing a heavy influence from his father. His career consists of inconsistent musical projects, the first of which was released in 1998 as a solo album entitled Into the Sun. He is currently performing with Charlotte Kemp Muhl as the band The Ghost of a Saber Tooth Tiger.

Also born on October 5th was Brian Johnson, who has been the lead singer of AC/DC since 1980. After the death of Bon Scott, a new frontman was needed. Little did anyone know, a fan had submitted an album by the British band Geordie, spotlighting Johnson as a new lead. He was invited into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2003 along with a few other members of the band.

Sir James Paul McCartney is a world famous instrumentalist, singer, songwriter and composer born in Liverpool June 18th, 1942. Along with fellow band members Ringo Starr and the late John Lennon and George Harrison made the Beatles a worldwide name. After the breakup of the band, McCartney went on to pursue a solo career. The Guinness World Records has named McCartney the “most successful composer and recording artist of all time”.
