October 7: Feast of Saint Pope Mark

On 7 October 336 Saint Pope Mark died and the day became his Feast Day. In Catholicism, whenever a saint dies, a day is dedicated to them, usually the day of their passing, which is called that saint’s Feast Day. Feast Days are given to every saint and therefore happen all throughout the year, but each saint only gets one day a year. Feast Days are celebrated with a religious service in the saint’s honor, a series of hymns, and sometimes fasting (voluntary abstinence from foods/drinks).

Catholicism incorporates fasting as a regular part of many aspects of religious worship further than Feast Days as well. Members of the faith couple fasting with fervent prayer as a symbol of devotion to Jesus and also fast on Ash Wednesday and Good Friday.

Catholics are not the only religion to participate in fasting. Members of the Christian faith fast during Lent, giving up something they value for the time period, and Muslims fast during Ramadan, not eating from sunrise to sunset. Other religions, such as Daoism and Buddhism, practice a looser practice of fasting. Buddhist monks do not eat after the noon meal and Daoists avoid grains and cereals.

Fasting is also used in a non-religious aspect for its health benefits. People that fast generally wish to lose weight or detoxify the body. Research shows that fasting aids the effects of chemotherapy, reduces the risk of diabetes and cardiovascular disease, and was also believed in earlier civilizations to be a remedy for certain ailments before more advanced medicines had been discovered.

Zach, i found this article to be very interesting, i had no idea that every saint has his/her own date and even more interesting that we celebrate them on the day they passed away! Saint Patricks day is one of my favorite holidays so i did a little research on Saint Patrick and found that some historians do not agree on the day that he died (march 17) and there are many theory on the year that he died.

After Pope Sylvester, Mark was raised to the Roman episcopal chair as his successor, he is also a Roman. The feast of deceased Pope was given on Oct. 7th in the old Roman calendar of feast. Ask Wednesday and Good Friday are part of the Catholioism for the fasting. It is said that members have fervent prayer as a symbol of devotion to Jesus.
