On 21 October 1797, the USS Constitution was launched from Boston Harbor. Named by President George Washington himself, this forty-four gunned vessel was one of six US flag ships commissioned to be built in order to combat the Barbary Pirates, who had been attacking merchant ships from the United States. Aside from increased firepower, the Constitution was built both larger and tougher than most ships. It was built from seven inch thick planks of living oak, and was reinforced with a copper sheathing to protect the hull.

The frigate performed well as the Mediterranean flag ship in the conflict with the Coast, and in 1805 the peace treaty with Tripoli was signed on its deck. The ship then served along the coast for two years in order to enforce the treaty’s terms. Then, during the war of 1812, the ship defeated British warship Guerriére. This battle earned the Constitution its nickname, “Old Ironsides” due to eye witness reports of British cannonballs merely glancing off the side of the ship as if it were made of iron.

Finally, in 1855, after almost six decades of serving its country, the USS Constitution retired from military service, and yet its work was not yet done. It first served as a military training vessel and then as a national landmark. In August of 2012, it was commissioned to set sail once again to commemorate the victory that earned its nickname. Old Ironsides remains one of the oldest warships afloat today, and it will serve as a symbol of our nations great victories for years to come.
