March 6: The Horseless Carriage

On 6 March 1896, Charles B. King became the first driver of a gasoline automobile in Detroit, Michigan.

Most people think that Henry Ford was the first automobile maker of the time. Truth is: Charles B. King came up with a cleaver invention known as the Horseless Carriage. This Horseless Carriage became a history in the making.

King became aware of Carl Benz, who patent the first gasoline powered automobile. When King found out about the work of Carl Benz, he knew he needed to act fast. King could see himself driving his own Horseless Carriage. After King conducted many prototypes, he came up with a carriage that was solely driven by man. On the 6 of March he took the Carriage for a spin down St. Antoine Street swinging all the way around to the famous Woodward Ave. The Carriage reached to about seven miles per hour on his route around Detroit with Henry Ford in a bicycle behind him.

This drive was done three months before Henry Ford came to make his own car. Most people do not know that Charles B. King was not only the first Detroiter that accomplished this, but he was Henry Ford’s mentor for the Model T. In 1908 the Model T rolled off the production line. This moment in time made Detroit be known as the Motor City.
